The incident took place in New Haven on Friday, March 31 on I-91 around 8:30 p.m. between Exits 1 and 2.

According to state police, troopers attempted to stop a wrong-way driver that was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes on I-91 between exits 2-1. The vehicle failed to stop and struck a police cruiser while in the left lane.

The vehicle continued northbound, traveling the wrong way, where it eventually rolled over for an unknown reason on the right shoulder between the Exit 3 ramps, state police said.

The driver, who was later identified as New London County resident Shane Martigano, age 41, of Groton, ran from the scene, police said.

State police said as a search of Martigano was underway, it was learned that he is currently a supervised party under the Department Of Probation.

Martigano's probation officer was contacted and as a result, a last known location for Martigano was established in a wooded area between the I-91 southbound exit 3 on-ramp and the State Street Commuter Parking Lot in the city of New Haven.

During the course of an investigation, it was determined Martigano had cut his GPS ankle monitoring device off and was not found in the wooded area.

However, he was later located and was taken into custody at his residence located in Groton, state police said.

Martigano was arrested and charged with:

  • Reckless endangerment 2nd Degree
  • Interfering with a police officer
  • Two counts of reckless driving
  • Evading responsibility
  • Driving the wrong way on a divided highway.

He was unable to post his $100,000 surety bond and was transported to the New Haven Correctional Center.
